Types of Dentures

The main types of dentures include: Full dentures (complete dentures that replace all teeth). Partial dentures (replacing some missing teeth). Implant-supported dentures (anchored by dental implants). Immediate dentures (temporary dentures placed right after tooth extraction).

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth when some natural teeth remain in the mouth. They are typically made of acrylic, flexible, or metal and are removable for easy cleaning and maintenance.

Acrylic Partial Dentures

These are the most common and affordable types of partial dentures. They consist of acrylic teeth attached to an acrylic base that fits over your remaining natural teeth.

Flexible Partial Dentures

Made from a lightweight and flexible material, these dentures are more comfortable and less likely to irritate the gums.

Metal Partial Dentures

These dentures feature a metal framework that provides added strength and durability. They are often recommended for those with fewer remaining natural teeth.

Implant-supported dentures

These are prosthetic teeth that attach securely to dental implants surgically placed in the jawbone, offering improved stability, comfort, and functionality compared to traditional dentures that rest on the gums.

What are Complete Dentures?

Complete dentures are designed to replace an entire arch of missing teeth, either on the upper or lower jaw or on both.

01

Conventional Complete Dentures

These are the traditional types of dentures made after the remaining teeth have been extracted and after the gums have healed, which can take several months.

02

Immediate Complete Dentures

These dentures are fabricated prior to the dentist extracting the remaining teeth and can be worn immediately after the extraction process. They serve as a temporary solution while the gums heal, after which they may need to be relined or replaced with conventional dentures.

Denture Process at
Dr. Serene Yu Dentistry

Our practice follows a comprehensive process that ensures that your dentures fit comfortably and function properly.

Initial Consultation and Evaluation

During your first visit, Dr. Serene Yu will perform a thorough examination of your mouth, discuss your needs and preferences, and determine the best type of dentures for your situation.

Impressions and Measurements

Precise impressions and measurements of your mouth will be taken to create a model for fabricating your dentures.

Denture Design and Fabrication

Using the impressions and measurements, our skilled dental technicians will design and fabricate your custom dentures, ensuring a natural-looking and comfortable fit.

Fitting and Adjustments

Once your dentures are ready, our office will call you, and you will then return for a fitting appointment. Dr. Yu will make any necessary adjustments to ensure a proper fit and bite alignment.

Follow-up Care and Maintenance

Regular follow-up visits are essential so that your dentist can monitor the condition and fit of your dentures, as well as make any necessary adjustments or repairs. Our professional dental team will also provide guidance on proper denture care and maintenance.

Benefits of Dentures

Dentures offer numerous benefits that can significantly benefit you and improve the overall oral health and quality of your life:

Improved Appearance and Confidence

Dentures can restore your natural-looking smile, boosting your confidence and self-esteem.

Better Speech and Eating Abilities

With properly fitted dentures, you can speak clearly and, moreover, be able to bite, chew and enjoy a wide variety of foods without difficulty or discomfort.

Preservation of Facial Structure

Missing teeth can cause the facial muscles to sag, leading to a gaunt and aged appearance. Dentures, on the other hand, help maintain the natural shape of your face.

Improved Oral Health

Dentures can prevent the remaining natural teeth from shifting or becoming misaligned, reducing the risk of further dental problems.

Before, After,
and An Appliance

Before
After
Dental Appliance
Before
This patient had a bridge that was initially supported by two implants on the upper left hand side. One of the implants failed. Instead of doing major reconstructive work to rebuild the bone structure and have another implant and another bridge, we opted to fabricate a cast partial denture that is supported by one implant.
After
All in all, it is a case well finished without having to go through major reconstruction and oral rehabilitation. It is also a more cost effective option that required a shorter treatment time frame. Both the dentist and the patient are quite pleased with the final outcome.
Dental Appliance
The implant now has a special attachment on top. This attachment has a "lock and key" mechanism to click onto a new partial denture that is custom designed for this patient. The lock and key mechanism allows a better fit and a more retentive denture, which improves function and esthetics.

Denture Care and Maintenance

The proper care and maintenance of your dentures is essential in order to ensure their longevity as well as the continuing optimal performance of your dentures. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Proper Cleaning and Soaking:

Dentures should be cleaned every day with a soft-bristled brush and a denture cleaner or mild soap and water. The dentures should also be soaked overnight in a denture-cleaning solution to ensure the removal of any remaining food particles and bacteria.

Handling and Storage

Always handle your dentures with care to avoid dropping or damaging them. When not in use, store them in a denture bath filled with water or a denture cleaning solution. This nightly soak will prevent the dentures from drying out and losing their shape.

Adhesives and Adjustments

Over time, there is a chance that the dentures may become loose or ill-fitting due to changes in your mouth or bone structure. Denture adhesives can provide temporary relief, but it's essential to have your dentures adjusted or relined by a dentist or a denturist to ensure a proper fit.

Regular Dental Check-ups

Even with dentures, it's crucial to maintain regular dental check-ups. Dr. Yu will examine your mouth, check that your dentures fit well, and, at the same time, address any issues or concerns you may have.

Initially, dentures may feel slightly uncomfortable or bulky as your mouth adjusts to them. However, they should eventually feel comfortable and natural with proper fitting and adjustments.

Yes, with properly fitted dentures, you should be able to eat most foods. However, starting with softer foods is recommended, and gradually introducing harder or stickier foods as you become more comfortable with your dentures.
